“Once Upon a Time” season 5’s finale episode is set to air next week, but there’s still a lot in store for fans.
The promo for this Sunday’s episode, “Last Rites,” showed the residents of Storybrooke gathered in a cemetery for someone’s funeral. It didn’t show whose funeral it was, so fans are now busy speculating about the potential death.
“Once Upon a Time” co-creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz recently dished on the fates of our favorite characters in the upcoming episode and the season 5 finale.
Emma (Jennifer Morrison) can be seen crying in the teaser for “Last Rites” and it’s not clear whether she’s mourning over a new loss or is still emotionally distraught because of Hook.
Regardless of the cause of Emma’s devastation, however, she is currently “vulnerable” to attacks from Hades and likely to sacrifice herself to save a loved one as she is still reeling from the guilt of having to leave Hook behind in the Underworld.
But “OUAT” EPs said that just because Emma and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) may be separated now, it doesn’t mean the latter still isn’t watching out for her.
“Hook may be in the Underworld, but that doesn’t mean he can’t watch over Emma and maybe help her out. This emotional distraction could make her vulnerable to sneak attacks from Hades or make her more willing to step into the crossfire to save her friends and family.”
“Emotionally, she is reeling. She certainly had a hard time falling in love, and to be honest, all her ex-boyfriends died on her. She feels some guilt and pain for bringing everyone to Hades, and she feels lost because she couldn’t save the person she loves,” he added.
Kitsis also talked about Hades, who is currently wielding an Olympian crystal, which Kitsis describes as, “magic unlike we’ve seen before because it comes from the gods, not a spell or a cauldron.”
And according to the showrunner, one of the few possible ways he could be defeated would be if Regina and Rumplestiltskin somehow team up and combine their powers against him. However, there will be a huge battle that could end in bloodshed before this gets resolved.
“With no heart, he was quite vicious, and I think we’ll find, with a heart, he can be equally as cold. I think he’s going to be brutal in a way that we haven’t seen a lot of our villains be”.
As for Zelena, the co-creators hinted that she might be forced to choose between Hades and Regina later on.
“Zelena is going to have to make a choice between the man she loves — a chance at something she never thought she would have — versus the chance of something she also never thought she’d have: a sister and a friend,” Kitsis teased.
