Ryan Murphy has finally spilled some details on how last year’s presidential election will fit into season 7 of American Horror Story.
The storyline for American Horror Story‘s seventh season, which was created as a bit of a joke to get tax breaks and ended up becoming a real thing that’s happening, has been teased over the last few months by executive producer and all-around TV dynamo Ryan Murphy as revolving around 2016’s presidential election, but we weren’t entirely sure how that would work (and neither was he at the time, to be fair).
But now it appears that Murphy’s worked out the story kinks and has a better understanding about how last November’s election, where we sat basically helpless and mouths agog as reality TV show host and failed casino owner Donald Trump become the most powerful man in the world, will influence the events of season 7.
“The first 10 minutes of the season, this season, takes place in a very eerie macabre way on election night and there’s something terrible that happens in the lives of our characters on election night as they’re watching it all go down,” he told E Online. “Which in itself was a horror story, so it’s like a horror story upon a horror story.”
And while Murphy had previously been going back and forth over whether to cast a couple of his recurring faves as popular vote-winner Hillary and human facepalm Donald, it now seems he’s decided to go in another direction.
“We don’t have actors playing them. You’ll see them on television.”
Well, alright then.

American Horror Story season 7 release date
Traditionally, American Horror Story has returned during the first week of October for most of its run, but season 6 saw a change of pace for Ryan Murphy and company. Not only was it the first year where AHS was merely 10 episodes (as opposed to 12), it was also the only one to premiere in mid-September. This was likely due in part to FX and Murphy’s energies also being diverted in 2016 by American Crime Story. Season 2 doesn’t look to be making the load any lighter, however, as that new anthology is now FX’s biggest hit.
We imagine a shorter and differently scheduled AHS will continue. Hence, a good guess at when to expect season 7 would be around 13th September, 2017.
