Man imitated the ’13 Reasons Why’ suicide and left behind tapes

A Peruvian man committed suicide and left behind audiotapes allegedly inspired by Netflix’s controversial suicide series “13 Reasons Why.”

According to a Peruvian news outlet, Diario Clarín, Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano, jumped from the window of his fourth-floor apartment in Arequipa, Peru, after shouting, “I can’t stand a heartbreak.” The 23-year-old’s mother was present during her son’s plunge. He reportedly survived the fall but was pronounced dead hours later at San Juan de Dios hospital.

Medrano left behind two suicide notes, addressing one letter to a woman who allegedly rejected his romantic advances and the other to his family detailing instructions where they could locate the recordings.

Although it is unclear whether the man watched or was inspired by the Netflix series in Diario Clarín’s report, his actions closely mimic the storyline.

In the “13 Reasons Why” series, which premiered in March, a teenager, Hannah Baker, records a series of 13 tapes before committing suicide, addressing each tape to 13 individuals she felt were partly responsible for her death.

The show, which was co-produced by Selena Gomez and based on a 2007 fiction novel of the same name, has attracted widespread criticism for its depiction of suicide. After concerns were raised by health experts who argued the show’s content could be potentially harmful to young people with suicidal thoughts, Netflix added warnings to the series.

“There has been a tremendous amount of discussion about our series, “13 Reasons Why.” While many of our members find the show to be a valuable driver for starting an important conversation with their families, we have also heard concern from those who feel the series should carry additional advisories,” Netflix said in a statement earlier this year. “Moving forward, we will add an additional viewer warning card before the first episode as an extra precaution for those about to start the series.”
