It’s no secret that Meredith Grey has been through a crap load of terrible situations. Plane crashes. Secret wives. Death after death, after death, after death. She’s also been through a pretty brutal attack that we still can’t really get over.
And that’s not even the beginning of awful things that have happened to poor old Mer so far on 12 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy. Here, we rank them all, from worst, to… well, even worse.
WHEN HER SURROGATE DAD ALMOST DIED
We all remember when Richard almost kicked the bucket during that super storm… poor Mer was beside herself and then some.
MEETING YET ANOTHER HALF-SISTER
These half sisters really do seem to like showing up at the hospital, don’t they? But while this certainly sucked at first, at least Mer got Maggie out of the equation.
MEETING HER FATHER’S OTHER FAMILY
There’s nothing that screams outcast like learning that your drunken father was actually a father to a whole other family.
HER ENTIRE CRAPPY CHILDHOOD
Remember when Mer’s mother tried to kill herself when she was a little girl? Or her mom told her what a disappointment she was? We’d say that sucked… a lot.
BEING BLAMED FOR HER STEP-MOTHER’S DEATH
It seemed like the hiccups. HOW, exactly, was that Meredith’s fault?
THE TIME SHE GOT STUCK HOLDING A BOMB
There are high stress situations, and then there’s the time you have to hold a live bomb during surgery and can’t move a muscle.
What’s worse than learning your dreamy new boyfriend has a wife? When he chooses said wife over you, of course.
HER MOM’S ALZEIHMER’S
Because regular mommy issues weren’t enough, Mer had to take care of her mentally unstable mother in her later years, too.
HER MOTHER’S DEATH
Maybe it was for the best, but it still hurt plenty when Meredith had to let go of her mum and their many, many unresolved issues.
THE TIME SHE WAS FIRED
Even though she tampered with that trial for all the right reasons, it cost Mer her job and Derek (at the time), all while she was ready to adopt Zola.
LOSING HER PERSON
Obviously we were devastated when Cristina Yang left the hospital. But for Mer it was like losing a limb.
GIVING BIRTH IN A SUPERSTORM
What’s worse than having to birth your son in the hospital during a crazy power outage? How about nearly dying in the process?
SUFFERING A MISCARRIAGE
Remember that time a shooter went on the rampage at the hospital? We still say the stress of that night was partially to blame. Speaking of…
WATCHING HER HUSBAND GET SHOT
We all knew what that shooter was after, but that didn’t make watching Derek get shot any easier — especially for poor Mer.
LOSING HER OTHER BFF
We cried right alongside Mer when George traced that “007” on her palm during that terrible Season 5 finale… and then again when he actually died in the Season 6 premiere.
THE WRATH OF AMELIA
There’s fighting like sisters, and then there’s being blamed for things that are beyond your control — like your husband’s death. Sorry Am, but we’re Team Mer on this one.
SURVIVING A PLANE CRASH
Obviously it’s groovy that she survived and all, but the mental toll it took on the poor doc? Terrible.
Plus not everyone was as lucky. Losing her sister just as they were becoming besties was just plain old awful.
HAVING TO WORK WITH HER HUSBAND’S KILLER
We think you’d have to be a saint, but for Meredith it’s just another dark and twisty form of closure.
THAT BRUTAL BEATING
As if being thrown around and nearly dying (again) wasn’t awful enough, she then had to face her attacker and forgive. Shudder.
WHEN SHE DIED
The episode may not have been one of our favourites, but holy heck… she was actually freaking dead for a while there. Brutal.
THE DEMISE OF MCDREAMY
Obviously this had to be the No. 1 moment, because losing your other person forever the way Meredith did… well that’s something you don’t just bounce back from.
